Happy Birthday to My Best Friend!

Dottie in MBZ

Auspicious dates.

Today is one of them.

It’s my husband’s birthday.

I won’t divulge the number of birthdays he’s had up to today. That’s not for me to say, and if he wants to tell you, he can write his own blog or guest write on mine one of these days. I’ll keep his secret. Suffice it to say that he has seen many a decade, more than six and less than eight, with a few years in between.

I love my husband dearly. How many women do you know who can go off to New York for five days with a girlfriend with the blessing of their husband, without a lot of warnings and caveats and “be carefuls”? Not many, I guarantee you. My husband knows that I’ll be careful. He knows that I’ll represent him well and probably won’t do anything to embarrass him. Although I know he worries a bit while I’m gone and is never completely comfortable until I’m safely home, that’s just because he’s protective and concerned, not because he fears that I’m doing something that I shouldn’t be doing.

He’s generous and kind and funny. He is truly the most consistently funny person I know. He makes me laugh all the time, and that’s a magnificent gift. He’s never ever been boring. After 44 years of marriage, I can honestly say that life with him has been quite interesting.

Someone asked us over dinner in St. Petersburg, Russia, this past July how we kept the partnership in our marriage working. I sat back and listened to Michael’s answer because I was curious as to what he would say. What he did say was complimentary and generous and showed the character of a man with a strong sense of security about who he is and what his role is in life. I sat and listened to him share how we work together, how we trust one another and compliment each other, and how we know one another’s strengths and weaknesses and how to work around them, and I marveled at God’s gift to me.

So given the fact that today is the day I release my weekly Rita’s Ramblings and that it coincides with his birthday, I thought it only fitting and fair to use this opportunity to brag a bit about him and let you all know what a wonderful husband and friend he is. If I had it to do all over again, I’d pick him for sure. And that’s saying something.

So happy birthday, Michael Warren. Enjoy your special day, and thank you for letting me share your life for at least 44 birthdays already.

You are still the man of my dreams.
